It\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW74144098 BCX0\">is in<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW74144098 BCX0\">\u00a0Western Saaremaa, only two kilometres northeast of Lake\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW74144098 BCX0\">Karuj\u00e4rv<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW74144098 BCX0\">. The hillfort measures approximately 270 metres northwest\u2013southeast and 170 metres northeast\u2013southwest, with an estimated courtyard area of 1<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW74144098 BCX0\">.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW74144098 BCX0\">8<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW74144098 BCX0\">\u00a0ha<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW74144098 BCX0\">. The lower flat section has historically been used as farmland \u2013 in the early 20th century, a well pit with walls made of fieldstones was\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108227683 BCX0\">reportedly still<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108227683 BCX0\">\u00a0visible there during ploughing.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW108227683 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-21c16b9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"21c16b9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW106157814 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW106157814 BCX0\">In 1984, a forest fire occurred on the hillfort, and sand was taken from the northeastern rampart for extinguishing<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW106157814 BCX0\">\u00a0fire<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW106157814 BCX0\">, which is why this section of the rampart now has a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW106157814 BCX0\">n\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW106157814 BCX0\">uneven appearance. In the same year, small-scale test excavations were carried out by Evald T\u00f5nisson<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW106157814 BCX0\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW106157814 BCX0\">\u00dclle<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW106157814 BCX0\">\u00a0Tamla. These<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW106157814 BCX0\">\u00a0excavations<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW106157814 BCX0\">\u00a0revealed that the lower area of the stronghold has a cultural layer 10\u201320 centimetres thick<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW106157814 BCX0\">.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW106157814 BCX0\">Traces of the cultural layer were also found in the higher northeastern part of the courtyard. Among other things, a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">h<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">ole was drilled on\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">top\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">of the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">rampart<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">. It was found that the mixed material\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">containing<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">\u00a0charcoal and burnt sand extends to a depth of 5.3 metres. The rampart is heaped from sand and stones onto the natural dune. Within the mixed sand are darker\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">layers<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">\u00a0and charcoal patches; the hillfort\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">seems to have<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">\u00a0experienced three major fires. At a depth of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">roughly 160<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">\u00a0cm, a compact charcoal\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">layer<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">\u00a05\u20138 cm thick was\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">encountered<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">. Below this\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">layer<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">were larger\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66940828 BCX0\">stones. At 175\u2013200 cm depth, another darker, charcoal-flecked layer resembling cultural soil appeared, under which again was lighter sand with darker charcoal streaks. The last, third layer lies at 330 cm depth and consists of an intense 10\u201312 cm thick burned layer of charcoal. It was found that the cultural layer was 15\u201325 centimetres thick and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263299015 BCX0\">contained<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263299015 BCX0\">\u00a0handmade pottery and finds dating to the 11th\u201313th centuries, while radiocarbon dates also\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263299015 BCX0\">indicated<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263299015 BCX0\">\u00a0the 9th\u201310th centuries. During the excavations, many burnt stones were discovered,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263299015 BCX0\">possibly from<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263299015 BCX0\">\u00a0earlier fortifications or buildings, as well as several pits with mixed layers and a few possible post-holes.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW263299015 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a4561c2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a4561c2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW208571418 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208571418 BCX0\">Small excavations at the hillfort were carried out in 2025.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208571418 BCX0\">The\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208571418 BCX0\">aim\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208571418 BCX0\">of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208571418 BCX0\">these<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208571418 BCX0\">\u00a0was to study the lower area of the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW208571418 BCX0\">K\u00e4rla<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208571418 BCX0\">\u00a0hillfort using a 3\u00d74 metre excavation, to clarify the period of use of the stronghold and the nature of the cultural layer. The main research question was whether the investigated area had been\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208571418 BCX0\">over<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208571418 BCX0\">built during the hillfort\u2019s period of use<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW208571418 BCX0\">.
