Knife sheath plating fragment, copper alloy.
Knife sheath plating fragment, copper alloy. The knife sheath is decorated with bronze plating and has a special extension. Similar, but narrower knife sheaths were widespread in Livic areas in Latvia (Spirģis 2008, 192–194). Knife sheaths with extension are in Saaremaa found mainly in early-13th-century female inhumation graves, but seldom also in stone graves (Randvere kalme, Mägi 2002, Pl. 40: 1). The Saaremaa-type knife sheaths were probably used from thelate 12th century to the mid-13th century.
