Take a trip back to the Viking Age in Saaremaa or visit the ancient Lepna mortuary house – see new micro-documentaries about Saaremaa’s history!
In the framework of the science popularisation competition organised by the Estonian Research Council, the project “With Video on Saaremaa’s Historical Landscapes”, was completed.
As a result of the project, 7 micro-documentaries on the history of Saaremaa and its various monuments were produced by Foundation Osiliana SA in cooperation with LLC Videoharidus.
Two of the micro-documentaries deal with the Viking Age of Saaremaa and the Medieval Age of Saaremaa. The other five focus on specific monuments and sites: the Tuulingumäe cult site in Tõnija, the Lepna mortuary house, the Viidumäe sacrificial site, the Valjala hillfort and the medieval cemetery in Karja. The sites were chosen for their uniqueness in the context of our region.
Saaremaa’s ancient landscape is brought to life through map animations and 3D reconstructions. Kristo Siig, the author of popular history videos for schoolchildren in Estonia, is the host of the programme.
All the videos will be freely available for viewing via the Osiliana website: https://osiliana.eu/multimedia/. The videos are subtitled in both Estonian and English.
In the future, information about the micro-documentaries will also be added to the information panels of the sites, allowing the films to be used as video guides.
The authors of the micro-documentaries are: Kristo Siig, Martin Männik, Marika Mägi, Piia Sandra Palm.
Foundation Osiliana was established in 2020 with the mission to scientifically research prehistoric and medieval archaeological and historical remains related to Saaremaa and the surrounding small islands. The results and the process of the research will be shared openly through the website: https://www.osiliana.eu/en/. SA Osiliana works in close cooperation with Tallinn University, National Heritage Board of Estonia and Saaremaa Museum.
